How Much Does Drain Cleaning Cost?

What actually moves the price, and how to compare two quotes that look different.

Last updated August 7, 2026

Why we do not publish a price range yet

We would rather show nothing than show a number we cannot source. Every figure on this site carries a link to where it came from, and we do not yet hold a defensible local price dataset for drain cleaning - so this guide covers what drives the price instead. When we have city-level figures we can attribute, they will appear here with their source attached.

What follows is what actually determines the number on your invoice.

What you are paying for

Access. If the property has an accessible cleanout, the plumber connects and starts. Without one, access means pulling a toilet or going through a roof vent, and that is labour before any clearing begins. This single factor moves a quote more than anything else.

Method. A cable machine bores through the blockage. Hydro jetting scours the pipe wall at high pressure. Jetting costs more, takes longer, and lasts longer where the cause is grease or scale.

Location in the system. A basin trap is minutes. A main line under the slab is a different job with different equipment.

Diagnosis. A camera survey adds cost and adds certainty. On a recurring blockage it usually saves money by ending the cycle of repeat clearances.

Timing. Nights, weekends and holidays carry a premium. If it can wait until Monday, it is cheaper on Monday.

How to compare quotes properly

Ask all of them the same four questions:

  1. How will you access the line - existing cleanout, or do you need to pull a fixture?
  2. Cable or jet?
  3. Is a camera inspection included, and do I get the footage?
  4. What is covered if the blockage returns within thirty days?

Two quotes that answer these differently are not quotes for the same work, and the cheaper one is not automatically the cheaper outcome.

Before you agree

Check the licence. In Texas that means an RMP number in the format M-12345 - you can check it here against the state roster in about thirty seconds.

Common questions

Why do two quotes for the same blockage differ so much?

Usually because they are not the same job. One may be cabling through an existing cleanout; the other may include pulling a toilet for access, jetting rather than snaking, and a camera survey afterwards. Ask each to state access method, clearing method and whether a camera is included, then compare.

Should I pay for a camera inspection?

Worth it when the same line has blocked before, when the house is old enough for cast iron, or when you are buying. Not necessary for a one-off kitchen sink blockage.
