Pipe Repair Cost Guide

From a single joint to a whole-home repipe - what drives the difference.

Last updated August 7, 2026

Why we do not publish a price range yet

Because pipe repair has the widest genuine spread of any job on this site, and a national average would be actively misleading. The same leak costs an hour in an open attic and several days under a slab. We publish numbers with sources; when we hold sourced local figures they will be here.

Access is most of the cost

Rank your situation:

  • Exposed pipe - attic, garage, crawl space. Cheapest. The plumber works directly.
  • Behind drywall - add opening the wall and making it good again.
  • Under a slab - add breaking concrete and reinstating it, or the cost of rerouting the line overhead instead.
  • Under the yard - add excavation and reinstatement.

Two quotes for “a leak” can be an order of magnitude apart on access alone, entirely legitimately.

Material matters as much as the leak

Copper and PEX in good condition are worth repairing. Brittle CPVC often cracks again next to the repair. Galvanised steel corrodes from the inside and a patch buys very little time. Polybutylene has a known failure history - repairs on it are money spent deferring a repipe.

Ask whether making good is included

This is the single most common gap between quotes. “Repair the leak” and “repair the leak and leave the wall as you found it” are different scopes, and the second one involves a drywall finisher.

When repiping is the right call

  • Three or more leaks in the same system
  • A material at end of life
  • A repair that requires opening most of the same walls a repipe would
  • You are about to renovate anyway and the walls are coming down regardless

Common questions

Why does a slab leak cost so much more?

Because most of the work is not plumbing. Reaching a line under a concrete foundation means breaking and reinstating slab and floor covering, or rerouting the line overhead to avoid doing so. The pipe repair itself may be an hour of it.

Is a whole-home repipe ever cheaper than repairs?

Frequently, over a few years. If access is the dominant cost, opening the walls once for a repipe beats opening them four times for four repairs - and it ends the failures rather than deferring them.
